Looke like Alex Karras making a tackle at 15:00 :
The direct approach. Effective, with enough mass and speed propelling it. A body tackle, or "spear" as some call it. It also works very well near ground level. If the target is caught flat footed or on his heels, both knees easily break and if not once down, you start breaking from the ankles up. Ground and pound.
No posturing. No threats or idle bantering. You spot a weapon about to be brandished/deployed; pepper spray, taser, gun, etc.; anything that can cause injury and you neutralize it. Quickly. No John L. Sullivan and the Marquis of Queensberry rules. No touching gloves. No posturing. This is street fighting. It's not MMA, it's not a boxing match, and nobody is scoring rounds, it's not a sport.
Good for him. Neutralize the threat to assure you'll be able to worry about repercussions later. Better to WALK into court as the defendant than be wheeled into it as the plaintiff.
